All Too Human

All Too Human – Jim Cicatko project room: Squirm – Dale Flattum JUNE 2002 “After an eight-year hiatus from making visual art, UNC MFA candidate Jim Cicatko began, around 1993, a new series of works revolving around the human figure. Incorporating ideas from the Pythagorean/Orphic soma-sema, body-tomb analogy, histories and literature of antiquity, and the Gnostic concept of the demiurge, Cicatko has created intriguing new large-scale works on paper. ‘Erasmus admonishes the schoolchild to ‘Traduce no Body,'” Cicatko says. “This work traduces the body, but with love. The paintings are imperfect representations of an anti-human ideal.'” Excerpt from the INDY Lump is located at 505 S. Blount St, Raleigh, NC. More information about our mission and exhibition programs can be found at lumpprojects.org.

Towards Tommorrow

Towards Tommorrow – Tammy Rae Carland MAY 2002 “Tammy Rae Carland, who teaches photography and video at UNC-Chapel Hill, has exhibited both internationally and locally (at Chapel Hill’s Ackland Museum of Art and at Raleigh’s LUMP gallery). She is also one of the ladies behind Mr. Lady Records, an independent music, video and distribution company that she runs with her partner, Kaia Wilson. Carland’s photographic work overlaps with Mr. Lady in both material and philosophical ways. Like Mr. Lady, Carland’s photography is about making the invisible deliberately and beautifully visible: lesbian domestic scenes, alternative familial relationships, poor and working class people, and Durham, N.C. Carland’s color series of lesbian beds is stunning. Taken from above, the beds become landscapes of love wherein abstract expressionist fields of color, patterns and textures express uncharted territories, complicated lands. The bed is a place […]

On the Dot

On the Dot MARCH 2002 “For On the Dot, Jen Talbot’s solo exhibition at Raleigh’s LUMP gallery, the Chicago-based artist has transformed the gallery into a Target (anti)ad, amusing viewers while simultaneously challenging the status quo. The result is one of the tightest shows I’ve seen in terms of design, color, concept, execution and installation. Two 9-foot red bulls-eyes are painted on opposite walls of the gallery. Two women–UNC-Chapel Hill undergraduate art students Lauren Adams and Leigh Suggs–are harnessed and suspended directly in front of the targets’ centers. Dressed in white protective jumpsuits, metal armatures of hoopskirts covered in white felt and red pom-poms, black swimming goggles, and Talbot’s signature red and white striped tights, the women each hold long fiberglass retractable poles with soft cloth swabs on the ends. One woman paints the other woman’s face with thick white […]

Unfiltered

Unfiltered – Michael Salter project room: Helper – Paul Evans FEBRUARY 1-24, 2002 “Raleigh artist Michael Salter, who was recently featured in SECCA’s Homegrown show, is the featured artist in LUMP gallery’s February exhibition. Unfiltered, Salter’s fourth show with LUMP, comprises a full range of media incorporating high and low technology, high and low art. It includes a series of drawings using stickers, kinetic sculpture and digital images, which come together in an obsessive exploration of discount stores, cable television and fast food. Salter will be joined by New York artist Paul Evans, whose exhibition, Helper, introduces viewers to a new world of stimuli through the use of painting, sculpture and video.” Excerpt from the INDY Lump is located at 505 S. Blount St, Raleigh, NC. More information about our mission and exhibition programs can be found at lumpprojects.org.

 Woman in the Sun

Woman in the Sun – Johnathan Jacquet project room: Charles Parker Boggs DECEMBER 1-31, 2001 “Think all the Y2K hype was bad? Try living at the end of the 9th century, when, because of the millennial predictions of St. John, the Christians were sure that the end of the world was upon them. The fact that the Arabs had invaded and conquered the Iberian Peninsula and the Visigoths dominated Spain only solidified their fears. In the midst of all this apocalyptic ruckus, a monk named Beatus of Liebana sat down and wrote his own commentary on the apocalypse, a text that became a medieval bestseller of sorts. Scribes loved his dark work and for the next three centuries, they copied the words and drew fantastic illuminations to accompany them. A thousand years later, UNC-Chapel Hill grad Jonathan Jacquet has delved […]

Thrillseeker(s)

Thrillseeker(s) – Ludwig Schwarz project room: Willie Gregory OCTOBER 2001 “At LUMP gallery, Dallas artist Ludwig Schwarz, who was recently featured in Art in America, and Brooklyn’s Willie Gregory, challenge viewers with minimalism, humor and pathos. Schwarz’s Thrillseeker(s), which loosely fills the front space, complicates the line between expectation and delivery with an open-for-business-style banner stretching across the gallery’s exterior, announcing “Ludwig Schwarz Indian Cuisine Lunch Buffet $5.95.” Inside, three photographic portraits printed on poster paper (at Eckerd’s One Hour Foto, the artist reveals) depict an Asian woman smiling in front of a blurred beauty products aisle, a Middle Eastern man smiling from the half-open window of his car, and a Caucasian man in a wig and Dali-esque moustache. The photos are pinned along the top of the wall near the ceiling, literally and figuratively distanced from one another across […]

The Young Ones

The Young Ones – Carrie Alter, Josh Rickards, Allison Edge and Justin Lincoln APRIL 2001 “There will be subdued celebration at LUMP this Friday night. It will not be provided by the friendly social event of First Friday or the cheap drinks offered toward the back of the gallery as much as by the art itself. LUMP’s new show, The Young Ones, consists of work by artists in their mid-20s who aren’t sure how willing they are to celebrate youth, but who are confident enough to be tender about it. The show is made up of work by Chapel Hill painter Carrie Alter, L.A. video artist Justin Lincoln, Brooklyn painter Allison Edge, and Greensboro painter Joshua Rickards, each of whom are exhibiting works they have just completed. While none of the works in this exhibition are as stylistically polished as […]

Balls and Dolls

Balls and Dolls – Max Below Toledo-Paris and Sherri Wood project room: Send in the Clowns curated by Lump Lipshitz APRIL 2000 “Wood has cleverly played upon the stereotypical naming of women as “dolls,” then invited women in a male-dominated art form (tattooing) to create uplifting female imagery for these stand-ins for the female figure, while insisting upon a traditional female craft – embroidery – for their execution. More outrageous are a series of cotton panties which Wood has embellished with vintage-style hand-towel designs that have a double-entendre edge. Adding to the sexual content of the message is the fact that these panties have split crotches, adorned with embroidered buttonhole stitching. The shock value in these works consists of their clever juxtapositioning of tame female craft with overt sexual reference. Max Below Toledo-Paris’s work operates on a much more complex […]

The Soft Museum

The Soft Museum – gallery exchange with Seattle’s Milky World gallery MAY 1999 “It was “Carry On,” a presentation by the Lump Gallery in Raleigh, N.C. Kwok encountered the work of Team Lump through cartoonist Paul Friedrich, whose art he exhibited last summer at Milky World. Friedrich introduced him to the Lump Web site. Through the extended e-mail correspondence that developed, the two galleries decided they shared tastes and fans. So Kwok proposed a modest “art exchange”: If Team Lump would come to Seattle, he would allow them a month at his gallery. Milky World would do all the press and house the artists, taking only its usual 40 percent of any sale. But in return, Lump had to reciprocate: mount and duly publicize a show of Seattle artists. There was one other requirement: All the art would be ‘carry-on,’ […]
