Leif Gann-Matzen presents Spirit Creek, a solo exhibition at Lump from September 5 through October 26. Opening reception September 5, 6-9 PM. Moving between processes both patient and immediate, Leif creates sculpture as a way of inhabiting the mystery of life and locating himself within it. His work unfolds through a range of media and methods, and many of his materials are gathered directly from the creek bed that surrounds his studio. Leif’s objects echo the drift of debris along the floodplain and the erosive nature of water, but also the slow pull of planets, the clustering of particles, and the way valence is less a fixed state than a promise of connection. Spirit Creek breathes life in its evolving arrangements – what is shown is a crystallization of the studio in motion, like a still taken from an ongoing current.

Leif Gann-Matzen (b. 1989) received a BFA in Sculpture from the Rhode Island School of Design, and lives in Hillsborough, North Carolina. Leif views his practice as a living extension of alchemy, where the projection of mind onto matter opens a reciprocal process: the material reshapes the maker even as it is itself reshaped, offering a site of continual transformation.
