LUMP Gallery is proud to announce its presentation of Good Grief: More Than A Feeling at the 2025 SPRING/BREAK Art Show in New York. In alignment with this year’s theme, “PARADISE LOST/FOUND,” the exhibition brings together six artists whose work reimagines the memorial not only as a marker of loss, but as a transformative site—where grief meets reflection, and memory becomes a creative, generative force. Artists include Ben Alper, Bill Thelen, Chanelle Allesandre, Conner Calhoun and Jerstin Crosby.
Good Grief: More Than A Feeling considers the memorial as a space between what has vanished and what remains, between history and presence. Some artists in the exhibition approach memorials as direct acts of remembrance: Bill Thelen’s Ghost Records pays tender tribute to friends, lovers, partners, comrades, folx, and fam lost to AIDS—an act of queer devotion that insists on presence through absence. Others look outward, engaging with historical time and cultural layering. In Ben Alper’s ongoing photography series Palimpsest, made during his time in Rome, the visible and invisible residues of centuries accumulate in a single frame.
Across painting, sound, photography, and conceptual installation, the artists mine memory in varied forms—personal archives, queer lineage, historical fragment, and ephemeral trace. The works collapse timelines, evoke lost worlds, and press forward with poetic clarity, offering new models of how we hold the past.
In an era of contested memory and rapid forgetting, Good Grief asks what it means to memorialize with sincerity. How do we locate paradise—not only in what was lost, but in the radical act of remembering?
