Plugged In

Plugged In September 2011 Plugged In – group show curated by Bill Thelen featuring Chris Musina, Lee Delegard, Jason Osborne, Jonathan Sherrill, Cora Lim, Neill Prewitt, Seoun Som, Ashley Florence This is a one weekend event. Plugged In -a group of young artists who may have their fingers on the pulse of contemporary culture also have a lot of things plugged in to the wall. Chris Musina: Culture red in tooth and claw. Using the culture of nature to explore the nature of culture. Lee Delegard uses ideas of play, experimentation, exploration, process, and discovery, in order to investigate the fluidity of her own subjectivity, as well as the constantly shifting meta-narrative of which that is one small part. The painter Jason E Osborne has often been referred to as the ‘elevator operator’ of art town. Jonathan Sherrill: Paintings on […]

The Front vs Team Lump : Drop City

The Front vs Team Lump Drop City June 2011 Drop art, a little known and microscopic movement born in 1961 in Lawrence, Kansas around the concept of “droppings” began when artists Gene Bernofsky and Clark Richert dropped painted rocks from a roof on the main drag of Lawrence Kansas to the sidewalk below. Early Drop Art works or “droppings” included “Pendulum” (a boot hanging from a rope held by the artists on the roof and dangling to the sidewalk below) and “Egg Drop” (a plate of over easy eggs, bacon, toast, coffee, and orange juice dropped on the same sidewalk). In 1965, Bernofsky (Curly), his wife JoAnn (Jo), Richert (Clard) and Richard Kallweit (Lard), along with a few others bought a 7-acre parcel of land outside Trinidad, Colorado with the intention of creating a live-in work of Drop Art. Inspired […]

EJ Hauser : Perfecto

EJ Hauser Perfecto May 2011 I create work that embodies contrasting yet inseparable parts, and bring together concepts, words, and images taken from my drawings, notebooks and copious lists. Some paintings take more extreme positions, while others exist in the spaces between. Images suspended in thick chaotic marks may be juxtaposed with panels covered in methodically made marks. Inside my heavy-paint paintings; heads, semi-fierce animals and other forces float and drift within bold fields of color. Simultaneously, my word-based paintings employ linked letters to create geometric patterns composed of writings I admire or multitudes of my own word dreaming. In all branches of my painting there exists an improvised editing system whereby the earlier stages of the painting resonate in the layers below. In unison these diverse paintings express my interests in a meandering range of topics like; seafaring tales […]

David Colagiovanni : ThankYouForVisitingTheInter.net

David Colagiovanni ThankYouForVisitingTheInter.net April 2011 ThankYouForVisitingTheInter.net will exist both online and physically in the gallery with objects that reference and complete meaning from both their online and physical presence. Through a series of self referring feedback loops, the objects in the show are transposed from one space to another and call attention to the in-between or non-space and the political and material gated communities that exist within the spaces of contemporary life. ThankYouforVisitingTheInter.net will be live ‘online’ accessible by visiting with your web browser and available for viewing in the gallery from April 1st – April 30th, 2011. David Colagiovanni lives and makes work in Carrboro, NC and Athens, OH. Colagiovanni is an artist in residence at the Morehead Planetarium in Chapel Hill. Casey Cook : Puncture

Casey Cook Puncture March 2011 Casey Cook began this current body of work, Puncture, while participating in the Red Sand Project as an artist in residency in Saint Barth, December 2010. The island was voluptuous and jagged, like knives on a beach. Inspired by the physicality of the landscape Cook began making three dimensional works and video. Perhaps these were in response to the islands crude overabundance of wealth, a reaction to the tension of being an outsider, or evidence collected from living inside an utterly picturesque environment with a phantasmagoric sense of danger. December 27, 2010 Went to ‘washing machine’ today. Huge cliffs at dusk, could barely see on the way back down. One rock was a lion’s head. I was inside a painting there, sitting down for a moment to feel the earth. I wanted to throw myself […]

Xiu Xiu : I Hate This Suffocating Fucking Towne

Xiu Xiu I Hate This Suffocating Fucking Towne February 2011 In the collected works for this exhibition, the members of Xiu Xiu span their continuing attempts at uprightness and unsparingness. All of the pieces are symbols of the wreck that is the mind and heart of Xiu Xiu. The band’s songs are about the experiences of child molestation, war, depression, the oppression of small towns, dancing alone too often, violent sex, loneliness, queer politics and the salvation found in cute things. Highlights include: Bizarre stuffed animals collected from 8 years of touring; a T-shirt written in the band members own blood; a collection of photos of a sex worker in Hanoi that were later used for the cover of the album A Promise; felt art about suicide used for the album Knife Play; felt art stolen from a preschool where […]

Harrison Haynes and Tory Wright : Counterfeit/Counterpart

Harrison Haynes and Tory Wright Counterfeit/Counterpart December 2010 A counterpart is a stand-in, a decoy, and a doppelganger for the real thing. It could be said that counterfeiting relates to an art practice that suggests a thing once removed or an interpretation or representation that implies a proposal of ‘authenticity’, a boast that could come true if the ruse works. Or, just as easily, its transparency, its fabricated nature, could be revealed. Fabrication suggests skilled labor along with the act of lying. Nonetheless, both require meticulousness, patience, practice and some amount of selfishness. In Counterfeit/Counterpart, Harrison Haynes and Tory Wright approach photography, appropriation and collage in opposing ways. Photographic images move into a sculptural practice and sculptural objects are compressed into two-dimensional surfaces. Haynes’ work employs material transformation to investigate interior spaces and objects related to his experiences as a […]

Lydia Moyer : black damp

Lydia Moyer black damp June 2010 The work in black damp draws on the story of the town of Centralia, once a community of about 1600 people in Pennsylvania’s anthracite coal region. A fire has been burning underneath the erstwhile town for forty years and it is believed there is enough coal underneath it to fuel the fire for two hundred more. Moyer uses installation and single channel video to explore the strange story of Centralia and the experience of ownership. black damp stems from a series of experimental non-fiction video works about the landscape of American tragedy. Focusing on sights that are largely un-sanctified, each installment attempts to recount and memorialize the narrative of a community that is generally not prioritized in national memory. Loss lies at the heart of the work. Lydia Moyer is a media maker and […]
